Exhibition "L'image d'après"
Paris, France 2007

program
exhibition of 10 photographers

size sqm 640

The exhibition was produced by Magnum Paris and the Cinematheque Francaise and the subject reflects the double vocation of partners.
Ten photographers by Magnum were invited to show their work relating it to the film makers (or cinematographic situations) that mostly impressed and influenced them.
Reactions were completely different for the ten and the exhibition design tried to reflect in different spaces this extreme individuality, without losing a kind of choral sense, that is proper of the Magnum Agency.
Interaction between reality and fiction, still pictures and movie pictures is at the base of the layout that puts in the center of the exhibit room the authors for whom the movie fiction or memory’s alterations trespasses in a very direct way into photography : Gilden / 1940s cinema noir’s open book, Pinkhassov / Tarkovski’s catwalk/altar, Power / Kieslovski’s family memories tower.
All around the perimeter the authors who maintain a kind of supposed “objectivity” in their use of photography: the real Iran civil war for Abbas who reminds of Rossellini, the fake Irak war for Peress who refers to Resnais, Soth’s abandoned cinemas looking at Wenders, Irish civil war for Wylie / Alan Clarke.
Authors aiming to create an unicum of slide projections and reference films (Gruyaert and Zachmann) or directly operating like filmmaker (D’Agata), are exhibited in “small cinemas”.
